Recently, our community in New Zealand was rocked by the tragic death of yet another youth, allegedly due to severe bullying at the same school my daughter attends. My own daughter has been a victim of such violence; she suffered a severe physical assault that was recorded and handed over to authorities. Despite the attack being committed by a known repeat offender with a history of similar behavior, the response was disheartening. We were informed that the perpetrator would not face criminal charges, as such measures are viewed as a last resort, and instead, counselling or a youth programme was suggested.

The leniency in such situations is alarming. It sends a dangerous message that bullying is somehow forgivable or manageable without the need for serious accountability. It's time to push for stricter anti-bullying legislation and measures to ensure that perpetrators are held accountable regardless of their age or circumstances. Current policies are insufficient and often allow repeat offenders to continue their harmful behavior without facing any criminal punishment.

The bullying epidemic is not confined to schools; it's prevalent in workplaces too. Personally, I have been bullied in every job I've held. The result is a cycle of trauma and fear that affects productivity, mental health, and personal growth. Like many, I now live with PTSD, a constant reminder of the unchecked behavior I faced in work environments.

Our goal is to advocate for stronger laws with tangible penalties for both youth and adults who engage in bullying. These laws should include mandatory legal repercussions for physical assaults, harassment, and any other form of sustained bullying behavior. Furthermore, educational and corporate institutions should be required to implement comprehensive anti-bullying programs and support systems to protect victims and rehabilitate offenders.

It's time for New Zealand to take a stand against bullying with robust, enforceable, and compassionate legislation that reflects zero tolerance. Let's honor the lives affected and even lost by ensuring that no other child or adult has to endure such pain and humiliation. We urge lawmakers and educational leaders to act swiftly in amending our policies to truly safeguard our communities.
