End Breed-Specific Legislation in South Carolina
End Breed-Specific Legislation in South Carolina
The Issue
South Carolina is home to hundreds of thousands of dog lovers who cherish their pets, regardless of breed. However, Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) currently discriminates against certain dog breeds, without considering the individual dog's behavior. This creates a bias against breeds such as Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, and others, which are often stereotyped as dangerous or aggressive. Statistically, incidents of dog bite-related injuries are not breed-specific but are more dependent on the individual dog's upbringing and environment. According to a report by the American Veterinary Medical Association, BSL has not proven to enhance public safety or prevent dog bites. Other states have successfully eliminated BSL, proving there are more efficient and non-discriminatory methods to ensure public safety. Therefore, we request the lawmakers of South Carolina to review and reform the current policies to stop discrimination against certain dog breeds. We urge the introduction of breed-neutral regulations, focusing on responsible pet ownership to truly enhance public safety. Sign our petition today, for a fairer and more compassionate South Carolina for all dogs.
