The Issue

As parents of boarding school students in a school in KwaZulu-Natal, our sons' well-being is our utmost priority. Ongoing concerns, since 2023, have escalated regarding the quality and management of food services provided by BidVest at our sons' boarding school. Each day, they are subjected to substandard and unhygienic food, and this situation has dire consequences. There are instances of rats running free inside the kitchen and the dining hall.  Video is available.

Our boys deserve nutritious & fresh meals that provide the nutrients, energy and focus necessary for their academic and extracurricular activities. Unfortunately, the reality is far from this necessity. Food that's being displayed on the BidVest Food WhatsApp group appears to be mere 'window dressing' and significantly differs from what's actually being served. Portions are drastically reduced, resulting in some boys going hungry because food runs out too quickly.

Reports from our sons describe raw chicken being served, a blatant disregard for food safety and health standards. The practice of reusing food, such as coleslaw, salad and other items, day after day poses a significant health risk, with many boys suffering from vomiting bouts at night, and often doctors’ visits which the parents have to bear the cost thereof.

Moreover, the environment created by the kitchen manager and servers is hostile and disrespectful. When the boys express their need for more food, they are dismissed with rudeness and told to move on. Some students are shown preference, being served more, some less, because they complained.  Even worse, food meant for the students is often taken by the servers for their own consumption, leaving our children shortchanged yet again.

This situation can no longer be ignored. Our sons' health, educational & sporting activities are being compromised by the neglect and mismanagement of BidVest's services. We demand that BidVest be prevented from continuing their current contract and from engaging in any future contracts with the school.

We urge the school administration and local health authorities to act swiftly in exploring urgent alternative food service providers who will prioritise the health, nutrition, and respect of our children. Our sons deserve more than what they are being given, and it is imperative that changes occur immediately to safeguard their well-being.

Please join us in this cause by signing this petition to bring about the necessary change. Your support is crucial in ensuring that our sons receive the quality care and nutrition they rightly deserve in their formative years. Let’s take action NOW to ensure a better future for all the students at the boarding school.
