The Issue
As a student in a school where we are increasingly forced to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in our classrooms, I have personally experienced the negative impacts this trend is having on our education and our environment. Instead of enhancing our learning, it seems to be bringing more stress and confusion. The AI tools frequently provide us with incorrect information, undermining not just our individual efforts but our trust in the learning process itself. Moreover, the constant use of AI technologies is having a detrimental effect on the environment. Globally, with the increasing reliance on digital technologies, there is an escalating demand for energy. AI systems, in particular, consume an enormous amount of power for data storage and processing. According to a 2019 MIT study, training a single AI model can emit as much carbon as five cars over their entire lifetimes. If the dependence on AI in education continues unchecked, we could witness a significant increase in energy consumption and carbon emissions tied directly to these digital learning tools. Not to mention, AI uses large amounts of electricity and water. The U.S. data center predicts electricity consumption to grow 133% by 2030 due to how much electricity AI uses while the usage continues to grow, possibly tripling by 2028. On the side of water, large data centers can consume up to 5 million gallons of water DAILY, a medium sized ai model consuming roughly 500 ml by itself, and by 2028, AI could require up to 720 billion gallons of water annually for the AI’s. Now imagine how much those numbers with grow if schools are constantly joining the flock and using AI. Furthermore, our reliance on AI and technology in schools is leading to a shift in how students focus and engage with the material. Many students, like me, find themselves distracted by the digital components rather than learning from them. The human interaction and critical thinking skills that are so vital to our educational growth are being compromised. There is also a significant concern about how the students learn. Many students cannot learn correctly just by reading and answering questions from an AI. Many students like myself need visual representation, repetition, and more! Any information that students do learn from this AI is quickly forgotten due to a lack of visual appeal or literally anything fun. Any information that is retained is usually just a memory of something the AI messed up. AI, which is presented as a tool to democratize learning, is instead threatening to exclude some students entirely. What can we do? Get rid of it completely. That’s right. I said it. We need to get rid of it. AI is ruining our environment and our education. So I compel you so join our cause and get AI out of schools for good.
