END Appropriation of Native Culture By Boy Scouts

END Appropriation of Native Culture By Boy Scouts
Why this petition matters
In the heart of former Native American land there are organizations, sponsored and maintained by the Boy Scouts of America, that are centered around appropriated Native American regalia, rituals, and even twisted versions of religious ideology.
These organizations, Mic-O-Say and Order of the Arrow, claim to be "loosely" based on Native American (or Indian on Mic-O-Say's website) culture. In reality members of this organization create mock regalia, adult leaders wear sacred headdresses, and hold dance performances and rituals based on those of Native Americans. Leaders call themselves Chief, Medicine Man, Shaman, and other titles reserved for revered members of tribes.
By signing you agree to join me in calling for Boy Scouts of America to denounce & dissolve these organizations and apologize for the impact they have had. In addition we will call for BSA to begin dialogue with tribes who may have once regarded lands currently used by these organizations as home or in any way sacred; we encourage BSA to allow tribal use of these lands and work with those tribes to create cultural immersion programming that may celebrate Native Culture without appropriating it.
Culture is not a costume... to appropriate a culture, rather than elevate authentic versions of it, is to participate in the genocide against it.
