End animal testing at the University of Toledo
End animal testing at the University of Toledo
The Issue

I am deeply concerned about the ongoing use of animal testing at the University of Toledo. Animals deserve to be protected from unnecessary suffering, and I strongly believe that the scientific community can and should strive to find alternatives. Advances in science present numerous opportunities to replace outdated practices with ethical and humane solutions. It's time for a change.
Every year, countless animals are subjected to invasive procedures and experiments at educational institutions like the University of Toledo. These animals, which include mice, rabbits, and many others, often endure significant distress and pain. Despite advances in technology and science, many of these methods remain unchanged, when, in fact, non-animal testing alternatives are available and continue to be developed.
Studies have demonstrated that many traditional animal testing methods are not as reliable as previously thought. For example, a report by the National Institutes of Health indicated that approximately 95% of drugs tested on animals fail in human clinical trials due to ineffectiveness or safety concerns. Meanwhile, innovative technologies like organ-on-a-chip, computer simulations, and advanced cell cultures have shown great promise and can provide ethical and accurate research results.
The University of Toledo has an opportunity to lead the way in ethical research practices. By phasing out animal testing and embracing non-animal research methods, the university can uphold high scientific standards while also committing to the principles of compassionate research. Furthermore, increasing transparency about how animals are currently used at the university will allow for informed decisions and accountability.
We urge the University of Toledo to take the following actions:
1. Develop a clear, structured plan to phase out all animal testing within the next five years.
2. Invest in and prioritize alternative research methods that do not involve living creatures.
3. Issue a detailed and publicly accessible annual report on animal research practices and the steps being taken to reduce and eventually eliminate animal testing.
These steps will not only enhance the university's reputation but also demonstrate leadership in ethical scientific research. Together, we can create a future where animal-free research methods become the norm, ensuring that progress does not come at the cost of defenseless lives.
Please add your voice to this important cause. Sign this petition to urge the University of Toledo to end animal testing and adopt more humane research practices.
