End Animal Sacrifice: Strengthen and Enforce Laws to Protect Animals in India
The Issue
As someone deeply concerned about animal welfare, it troubles me to see sentient animals subjected to suffering and death in the name of religious practices. In India, where compassion and spirituality are deeply valued, I believe we should seriously examine whether the killing of animals is necessary for religious worship when humane and symbolic alternatives are available.
This petition is not an attack on any religion or on the right to practice one's faith. It is a call for greater protection of animals and for religious practices involving animal sacrifice to be addressed through compassionate, lawful and humane means.
India already has animal-welfare legislation, and some states have enacted specific laws prohibiting animal sacrifice in particular religious settings. For example, Telangana has the Telangana Animals and Birds Sacrifices Prohibition Act, 1950.
However, the legal framework and its application differ across states and circumstances. This creates a need for a careful review of existing protections, their implementation, and any gaps that may allow preventable animal suffering to continue.
We therefore call for:
Effective enforcement of existing laws prohibiting animal sacrifice wherever they apply.
A review of existing legal gaps and inconsistencies relating to religious animal sacrifice across India.
Stronger and clearer legal protection for animals, where existing protections are inadequate.
Accessible mechanisms for citizens and animal-welfare organisations to report suspected illegal animal sacrifice and obtain timely action from authorities.
Awareness programmes promoting humane and symbolic alternatives to animal sacrifice, in consultation with communities and religious leaders.
Transparent monitoring and reporting of enforcement actions so that existing protections are meaningful in practice.
Protecting animals from unnecessary suffering does not require hostility towards religion. We can respect freedom of belief while also asking whether a sentient animal needs to suffer for a religious practice to have meaning.
Animals cannot speak for themselves in our legal and political systems. We can speak for them.
If a religious practice can be performed without killing a sentient being, compassion should be given a chance.
Sign this petition and call upon the Government of India and State Governments to strengthen animal protection, enforce existing prohibitions, address legal gaps, and promote humane alternatives to animal sacrifice.
