I live in a place where the beauty of nature is marred by an ugly truth - the unreasonable killing of animals. In Lapu-Lapu and Cebu, Philippines, many dogs and other animals are being killed unreasonably by humans. This heartbreaking reality is not just a personal concern but a societal issue that needs immediate attention.

Animal cruelty is not only morally wrong but also against the law. The Philippine Animal Welfare Act (Republic Act 8485) clearly states that it is unlawful for any person to torture any animal or neglect to provide adequate care, sustenance or shelter. Despite this law, cases of animal cruelty persist.

According to data from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), thousands of cases are reported each year across our country. However, many more go unreported due to lack of awareness or fear.

We must take action now! We urge local authorities in Lapu-Lapu and Cebu to enforce stricter penalties for those who violate our animal welfare laws. We also call on schools and communities to educate people about responsible pet ownership and respect for all living creatures.
