The Issue

End Animal Abuse and Strengthen Protection Laws

Domestic cat Minnie, my kitten, holds a special place in my heart. We adopted her from a friend’s veterinary clinic when she was just six months old — tiny, underweight, and extremely defensive. We were told she had been found alone on the streets, cold and starving. The man who rescued her tried to care for her, but because she constantly fought with his other cat, he eventually brought her to the vets, where we gave her a new home.

At first, Minnie struggled to trust people. She often bit and scratched, and her fearful behaviour made us suspect she may have experienced abuse or neglect before being rescued. But with patience, compassion, and proper care, Minnie slowly transformed into the happy, playful, loving cat she is today.

Sadly, not every animal gets the same second chance.

Across the world, millions of animals suffer from neglect, abandonment, and cruelty every year. Many are left homeless, abused behind closed doors, or forced to live in fear and pain with no way to escape. Animal abuse is not only cruel — it reflects a serious failure to protect vulnerable living beings who depend on humans for safety and care.

No animal should ever have to suffer abuse or be abandoned on the streets. Current punishments for animal cruelty in the United Kingdom are still far too weak. The maximum prison sentence for the worst forms of animal abuse is up to five years, but many offenders receive far less. Those who deliberately harm animals should face stronger consequences, including longer prison sentences and permanent bans on owning animals again.

I also believe it should be illegal to knowingly sell or give an animal to someone with a history of animal abuse.

My goal is to help create a world where animals are treated with kindness, dignity, and respect — where our relationship with them is built on compassion, not cruelty. But change can only happen if people speak up.

Please sign and share this petition to urge lawmakers to strengthen animal protection laws, increase penalties for abuse, and help create a safer world for every living creature.
