Every dog has a story. This is Blanca’s.
Blanca was a big girl with a huge heart. She touched everyone she met.
A tourist found her hobbling around near a dumpster, then posted a video on Facebook. After a two-week search, Saranda Dog Services found Blanca — one front leg broken and the other ripped open and infected — near the city’s Mango Beach. She was likely hit by a car, then left to suffer or die.
By the time she was found, the broken leg and infection had probably gone on for months. By that point, the infection had taken her flesh down to the bone and was impossible to heal.
Working closely with a local veterinarian, Saranda Dog Services battled the infection and made the heart-wrenching decision to have Blanca’s leg amputated. Then, when the surgery was set and funds had been raised to pay for it, Blanca had a litter of puppies.
She was a great mom: she nursed her own pups, who sadly didn’t survive long, and also some other motherless newborns. Because she couldn’t endure the trauma of amputation while caring for tiny puppies, surgery was delayed.
But the surgery finally happened and Blanca came through like a champ. She was up on her feet, climbing stairs, and eating well within a day or so.
Then this big-hearted girl broke the hearts of everyone who had come to love her. After a warm dinner of beef liver and chicken, she began to slip away for reasons we don’t fully understand. Her caretakers tried heroically to find a dog to donate blood and save her life, but time ran out.
