I am a resident of Ottawa, ON, Canada and an animal lover. The issue I bring to your attention is close to my heart and home. Our local zoo has been consistently involved in practices that are not only unethical but also cruel. There have been numerous instances where animals have been abused and starved, causing them unnecessary suffering. The animals are kept in small enclosures that do not match their naturally habitat. 

In Ontario, you can’t build a patio in their backyard without a permit, but you can open a zoo imprisoning dangerous, exotic animals—all without a license, permit, or oversight. Laws are so weak in Ontario that authorities can’t even close down a zoo, no matter how badly the animals are suffering.

According to the World Animal Protection organization, up to 75% of the world's zoos fail to meet acceptable animal welfare standards (World Animal Protection). This statistic is horrifyingly high, especially when we consider that our local zoo might be part of this percentage.

Animals in zoos are supposed to be ambassadors for their species in the wild - they should not be subjected to abuse or starvation. They deserve respect and care as any living being does. It is our responsibility as a community to ensure their well-being.

The situation at our local zoo needs immediate attention from authorities who can enforce stricter regulations on animal care standards. We need your support in bringing about this change for the betterment of these innocent creatures' lives.
