Live animal export from Australia is a savage trade. Many animals perish and die before they reach their destination. In foreign countries, these animals face slaughter not governed by Australian animal welfare laws, this leads to brutal and inhumane treatment.

The sight of sheep, cattle, or other livestock crammed into ships for weeks without adequate food, water, or ventilation is heart-wrenching. They endure extreme temperatures, suffering injuries and diseases caused by the harsh conditions. It’s not just unethical, it is a stain on our nation’s reputation of being a leader in animal welfare.

Australia exports millions of live animals each year to countries where welfare protections are weak or non-existent. According to the RSPCA, thousands die onboard during transit due to poor conditions, and many more suffer quietly. Why are we allowing this to happen when we have the option to process meat in Australia under stringent welfare standards? It’s time to put an end to this cruelty.

Replacing live exports with frozen and chilled meat trade not only ensures humane treatment of animals but also strengthens our economy by keeping profits within Australia. Processing livestock domestically means more jobs and higher standards for food production. New Zealand has successfully transitioned to an all-meat trade model, showing that it is entirely feasible and economically viable.

By ending live animal exports, the Australian government can safeguard the welfare of animals and uphold moral responsibility while supporting our agricultural sector innovatively. Such an initiative aligns with our values as a country committed to high welfare standards.

Urge Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to ban live animal export and invest in sustainable, humane alternatives. Sign this petition to show your support for animal welfare and sustainable agricultural practices. Together, we can stop the unnecessary suffering and lead by example on the global stage.
