Irish Caregiver's case shines light on the harsh realities of the War on Drugs

In our continuous fight against the unjust and disproportionate consequences of the War on Drugs, today, we bring your attention to the case of Patrick Moore from County Limerick, Ireland.

Moore, a selfless cannabis 'caregiver' and father of two, has been serving time for providing cannabis oil at no charge to patients with life-limiting conditions. His intention was clear: to alleviate the pain and suffering of those in dire need. However, the Irish state decided to honor Moore for his altruistic and life-saving jobs by declaring him a criminal and punishing him by sending to prison.

In December 2022, Patrick pleaded guilty to these charges and received a 5-year sentence, of which he is expected to serve 3-years with the last 2 suspended. This sentence, for many, starkly highlights the disproportionate punishments meted out in the name of the War on Drugs.

In a glimmer of hope, Moore has recently been moved to an open prison, signaling a small but significant shift. The move comes as Moore’s family are preparing to launch a campaign to appeal his sentence, with a plea to Irish President Michael D Higgins who, under Irish law has the power to pardon or commute sentences.

Medical cannabis has been legal in Ireland for use in certain conditions since 2019, but less than 100 patients are thought to have been able to obtain a prescription through the Medical Cannabis Access Program (MCAP) and it has been criticized for being too ‘restrictive’. 

Meanwhile, an ongoing Citizens Assembly on Drug Use is expected to recommend the decriminalization of cannabis and all drugs for personal use in Ireland.

We share this update not only as a testament to Patrick Moore's story but also to highlight the countless individuals facing similar or even harsher punishments globally. These are individuals who, under different circumstances or in different jurisdictions, might be hailed as caregivers rather than criminals.
