Yesterday afternoon, we learned the great news that Scottish Water has hired a contractor to remove sewage debris, following potentially at least 4 day's worth or 96 hours worth of largely untreated sewage overflows entering from East Calder Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW) in particular. This is a small step in the right direction. We won't achieve real action until the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and Scottish Water accept that the recurrent sewage overflows are unacceptable and a main source of the River Almond suffering from poor water quality.
Scottish Water accepting a degree of responsibility in removing this sewage debris washed downstream from West Lothian's Wastewater Treatment Works from somewhere downstream of Almondell and Calderwood Country Park to East Calder WwTW. We have asked for further information, but are led to believe this hopefully includes the accessible fully affected recent.
We are now working on converting the River Almond Sewage Action Group to the River Almond Action Group, which will be an unincorporated group, which will be able to access local funding to help in our short and undoubtedly long-term fight for a cleaner, healthier, and swimmable River Almond.
In the meantime, please be cautious in and around the River Almond given the recent sewage spills and hope that you all have a lovely weekend. Long may the good weather continue - it's good for us and the environment!
Please continue to get in touch if you'd like to become involved in the River Almond Action Group:
