Encourage UK Schools to Acknowledge and Educate about the Humanitarian Crisis in Palestine
The Issue
As a mother of four, I sit comfortably in my home, yet I am haunted by the thoughts of what parents in Palestine are enduring. We have a duty as parents to raise our children - the future generation - with compassion for humanity and an understanding of injustice. This education begins at home but must continue at school where children spend a third of their day.
In 2022, when Russia invaded Ukraine, UK schools welcomed affected children with open arms. Our students learned about the crisis and showed empathy towards those suffering. Today, we face another humanitarian crisis - this time in Palestine.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in countless human rights violations against Palestinians. According to Human Rights Watch, Israeli authorities have systematically discriminated against Palestinians on both sides of the Green Line since its occupation began over half a century ago (Human Rights Watch report 2021).
Our children need to be aware of these injustices just as they were for Ukraine. They should be given opportunities to show their support for Palestinian people – whether it's through raising the Palestinian flag, observing moments of silence or participating in fundraising activities.
By incorporating these actions into our educational system we can teach our children that compassion knows no borders and that every human life is valuable regardless of nationality or ethnicity.
Let's call upon UK schools to acknowledge this crisis and educate our students about it – because understanding breeds empathy and empathy breeds change.
Let’s begin this change at our own local schools as each one of our efforts can collectively end this oppression.
