The Issue

In my old school, the classroom was a place of tangible interaction, of hands-on experiences, and vibrant discussions. It was where I, and so many of my classmates, learned how to communicate effectively, be creative and collaborate with each other. Unfortunately, this dynamic is changing at an alarming rate with the rise of technology in schools, specifically the overwhelming dependence on Chromebooks and screens in educational curriculums.

I’ve noticed it, and maybe others haven’t yet, but the change is unsettling and unhealthy for our young minds. Screen-based learning is replacing the valuable face-to-face time with peers and teachers. Several studies have shown that learning retention rates, personal interaction skills, and concentration levels suffer when students spend excessive time on screens. For example, a study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) found that countries investing heavily in technology in schools saw no noticeable improvement in reading, mathematics, or science outcomes.

Moreover, excessive screen time is linked to various adverse health effects, including increased risk of eye strain, sleep disruption, and even mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, especially in young minds that are still developing. A study published in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence highlights that adolescents who spent more time on digital screens were more likely to report depressive symptoms and lower levels of psychological well-being.

Our goal should not be to eliminate technology entirely but to strike a balance that nurtures holistic development. Schools could adopt a blended learning approach, utilizing technology and maintaining the integrity and benefit of face-to-face interaction. Incorporating more hands-on activities, promoting outdoor lessons, and offering courses on digital well-being could greatly benefit student life and learning.

Let's send a powerful message to educators, school administrators, and policymakers: We must create learning environments that prioritize the health and educational advancement of our future generations. Reducing the dependence on screens and re-introducing human-centric and interactive forms of learning will create a balanced and effective educational system.
