Why I Started This Petition

This started with a simple thought:

What does it really mean to live a life worthy of being called saintly?

Dolly Parton was not Catholic. I know that. And I know the Catholic Church has an established and sacred process for recognizing saints. This petition isn’t about asking the Church to ignore those requirements or to simply declare someone a saint because she was famous or beloved.

It’s about something different.

It’s about asking Pope Leo XIV and the Catholic Church to consider the life Dolly Parton lived and the example she set for millions of people.

Dolly spent her life using what she was given: her talent, her success, her wealth, and her influence, to give back to others. She devoted herself to children, literacy, education, families, and communities in need. Through her Imagination Library, millions of children received books at no cost. She gave generously to people facing hardship, supported communities after disasters, and continually found ways to use her success to help other people succeed.

She also showed compassion and support for the LGBTQ+ community, offering kindness, acceptance, and encouragement to people who have often faced rejection and discrimination.

But I don’t think it was just the amount of money she gave that made her extraordinary.

It was the way she lived.

Dolly consistently demonstrated kindness, humility, generosity, compassion, forgiveness, hope, and a genuine concern for other people. She spoke openly about her Christian faith throughout her life, and faith was a recurring theme in her music and the values she expressed publicly.

She became one of the most famous and successful people in the world, yet she continued to emphasize giving, helping others, welcoming people, and making the world a little better for those around her.

And that made me wonder:

If saints are meant to be examples of extraordinary lives, people whose actions inspire us to be more loving, more generous, more compassionate, and more devoted to serving others, why shouldn’t we at least ask the question about Dolly Parton?

I understand that sainthood isn’t something determined by popularity. I understand that Dolly was not Catholic. I understand that there are requirements and a formal process that cannot simply be bypassed by a petition.

That’s not what I’m asking.

I’m asking Pope Leo XIV to consider her example.

To consider whether a woman who spent a lifetime using her gifts to help others might represent something of the very spirit that Christians are encouraged to emulate.

Maybe the answer is no.

But I think the question is worth asking.

And if enough people believe that Dolly Parton’s life represented an extraordinary example of Christian virtue, charity, humility, service, compassion, and love for all people, including members of the LGBTQ+ community, then I believe we should be able to bring that message respectfully to the Holy Father.

So I’m asking you to sign this petition, not necessarily because you believe Dolly should literally become a Catholic saint, but because you believe her life was an extraordinary example of what it means to live generously, love others, welcome people, and use what you’ve been given to make the world better.

Let’s see how far this can go.
