Encourage Lompoc Unified School District to limit YouTube access on school devices
The Issue
As the parent of two students in the Lompoc Unified School District (LUSD), I am deeply concerned about the unrestricted access to YouTube on school devices through their LUSD Google accounts. This issue directly affects my family, as my children, like many others, are captivated by entertainment content that might not be educational or aligned with our family's values and guidelines.
In numerous households, parents make concerted efforts to monitor their children's media consumption to ensure it's age-appropriate and beneficial. However, this vigilance is undermined when students are allowed unsupervised access to YouTube at school, where the lure of non-educational videos can divert attention from learning and compromise their safety.
Research highlights the potent influence of media on young minds. According to a Common Sense Media report, kids aged 8-12 spend an average of 4-6 hours a day on screens, with significant exposure to media content that may not always be age-appropriate. While YouTube has educational resources, it also hosts a vast range of content that can be distracting and unsuitable for young audiences.
I urge the leaders of LUSD to take immediate action by implementing restrictions on YouTube access on school devices. Solutions could include setting time limits, enabling access only to educational content, and establishing strict filtering options that align with educational goals. These measures will help in creating a controlled digital environment, ensuring that students are engaged in productive learning experiences and are not exposed to inappropriate material.
Lompoc Unified would not be breaking new ground by implementing these restrictions. Nearby districts (Santa Barbara Unified School District, Los Angeles Unified School District, San Luis Obispo Coastal Unified School District) are already taking action.
We encourage LUSD to follow the lead of neighboring districts by restricting general student access to YouTube while preserving teacher access to educational content.
We must protect our children's education and well-being. Join me in advocating for these essential changes within the Lompoc Unified School District by signing this petition. Together, we can make a positive impact on our community’s educational standards and ensure a safe learning space for all students. Sign this petition to make a change.
