Encourage improvement of Cuba waste transfer station infrastructure
The Issue
My name is AJ Pacheco, and I am a resident of Northwest Sandoval County. I am writing this petition to shine a light on a pressing issue that affects our community profoundly. The current state of the waste transfer station in Cuba, New Mexico, under Sandoval County's jurisdiction, tragically falls short of meeting our community's needs.
This waste transfer station is simply inadequate. Its size is insufficient to accommodate the waste volume generated, leading to unsanitary conditions as uncontained garbage overflows; making the site a serious public health concern. Moreover, its operating hours are limited, making it challenging for community members who have typical working hours to access the facility.
The closest alternative disposal site is over an hour away, effectively making it inaccessible for many residents of Northwest Sandoval County. This not only causes inconvenience but has also led to an increase in illegal dumping on county, state, federal, and private lands. This illegal dumping poses severe risks to our environment and community aesthetics, inflicting long-term harm.
We need immediate action to expand and improve the infrastructure at the Cuba waste transfer station. Proposed enhancements include expanding the waste handling capacity and increasing the facility's operating hours. These changes would ensure that all community members can responsibly dispose of their waste without resorting to illegal dumping.
Furthermore, investing in infrastructure improvements such as covered garbage containment and regular maintenance will curb the health risks posed by overflow and uncontained waste. Implementing these changes will drastically improve the quality of life in our community and protect our beautiful natural landscapes.
Sandoval County officials, it is time to take this matter seriously and allocate the necessary resources to solve this well known and decades long issue. We believe that a well-maintained and properly run waste management facility is critical to our community’s health, environment, and well-being.
Please stand with us by signing this petition to urge Sandoval County to prioritize improving the infrastructure and operating hours of the Cuba waste transfer station, ensuring a cleaner, safer, and more convenient environment for all residents. Together, let's make a difference in our community.
