As of now Hawaii does not have an effective filtration system in sewage for microplastics at or under the size of 2mm. Currently microplastics can be found in our water due to the breakdown of macroplastics, microplastic leakage, as well as the microfibers that break off of our clothing in washing machines. This is very problematic because the amount of microplastics appearing in the surface ocean is rapidly increasing. These microplastics have been proven to be harmful to marine animals, and are a major contributor to the spread of plastics. Our current sewage filtration system does not filter any microplastics under 2mm, which are completely free to find their way into the ocean. The microplastics that are filtered though, often end up going back to land inside of sewage sludge. 

This petition is to encourage the Wastewater Branch, the association in charge of our wastewater, to establish a microplastic filtration system that is capable of separating sludge, microplastics, and water while also effectively disposing of them. It would be greatly appreciated if you helped take action on this matter by signing this petition.
