Encourage diverse shops and services in Rayleigh

The Issue

My town of Rayleigh has always held a unique charm for us locals, full of a variety of businesses that cater to every one of our needs. Recently, however, we've seen an unprecedented rise in the number of similar shops offering the same services opening in our area. This overabundance is leading to a limitation in the variety of shops on our high street.

As per The Local Data Company (2018), having a varied high street is crucial for a balanced local economy as it attracts a wider range of customers and stimulates more overall transactions. Having a wealth of the same shops, although beneficial for some, is resulting in a lack of diversity which could lead to decreased foot traffic, impacting all businesses adversely.

Additionally, the excess of limited diversity of shops results in unnecessary competition among small business owners, which may lead to an unhealthy business environment. In other towns where this trend has happened, a significant number of businesses have had to close within their first year of operation (Institute of Place Management, 2019).

Therefore, we call on the local council of Rayleigh to implement a limit on the number of barber shops in our town. This action will ensure a balanced variety of businesses, aiding a healthier local economy and maintaining our beloved town’s unique charm. Let's support the diversity and vitality of Rayleigh's high street. Please, sign the petition now and pass it on to others who care about our community.
