Encourage Cornwall Shops to Include Cornish Translations on Signs
The Issue
Many places around the world proudly exhibit their local language on shop signs. Crisis for Cornish, a group spearheading language revival, estimates that there are now around 300 fluent Cornish speakers, with up to 3,000 people boasting some knowledge of the language (source: BBC). Such measures provide a significant boost to local language preservation and instill a sense of community. In Wales' case, it's a legal requirement to have both Welsh and English on signs. This helps promote and preserve the Welsh language, which is spoken by 29% of the population in Wales (source: Office for National Statistics). We believe that adopting a similar approach in Cornwall, by including Cornish translations on shop signs, will contribute to preserving the unique cultural identity of the region and promote linguistic diversity. Please sign this petition to urge Cornwall's shops to begin displaying Cornish translations alongside English on their signs.
