On behalf of the Gamma Theta chapter of Alpha Sigma Tau at Penn State Behrend, we are asking our fellow sisters from every chapter to sign this petition to amend the AST constitution. Currently, the constitution reads, "membership in Alpha Sigma Tau is open to women and transgender persons who identify as women. Males are excluded from membership as provided by Title IX, 20 E.S.C §1681 (a)(6)(A), which pertains to social fraternities and sororities" (https://alphasigmatau.org/join/membership-eligibility/).  Nowhere within the constitution does it mention the allowance of Non-Binary members, which is creating issues within our chapter. We currently have 1 initiated Non-Binary member and 1 ribboned Non-Binary member. These two individuals are the human embodiment of the values we practice as an Alpha Tau, and their pronouns should not restrict them from joining our sorority. We can see how this could negatively impact the future of AST by not permitting Non-Binary individuals to join, and we, the Gamma Theta chapter, are asking each of you to sign this petition to better the future of AST.
