Encourage Adirondack Health to improve SANE availability
The Issue
My personal experience highlights the urgent need for improved Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) services within the Adirondack region. After experiencing a traumatic incident, I faced not only psychological stress but also significant procedural delays that hindered justice. In addition to traveling between three hospitals back-to-back, it took an unnecessary 8 hours to even begin the SANE process due to the lack of certified staff, adding to the trauma. With concerns about potential drugging, this delay might have compromised vital forensic evidence necessary for justice. Currently, Adirondack Health lacks sufficient SANE-certified professionals, leading to delays and inconsistencies in providing crucial services. SANE-certified nurses are vital in offering forensic examinations and compassionate support for sexual assault victims. The Adirondack region, supported by significant tourism, has an opportunity to address these inadequacies. Both the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism (ROOST) and the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA), which helped draw over 1 million visitors between 2022 and 2023, can be key partners in effecting change. Their collaboration with Adirondack Health can be pivotal in securing necessary funds and resources to enhance SANE services. This petition urges Adirondack Health to sponsor SANE certification for multiple staff members and hire SANE-certified per diem employees within a reasonable radius to ensure timely response. Partnering with local authorities and tourism bodies can bridge resource gaps and bolster rapid response capabilities. Join us in calling on Adirondack Health, ROOST, and ORDA to improve SANE availability. Sign this petition to advocate for swift and meaningful changes that are essential for justice, community health, and the dignity of all affected individuals.
