Enact Stricter Minimum Sentencing of Vehicular Homicide, for Repeat OVI Offenders

Enact Stricter Minimum Sentencing of Vehicular Homicide, for Repeat OVI Offenders
The Issue
This is a campaign deeply personal to me and my family after we tragically lost my brother-in-law in a hit and run accident. The suspect, a man previously charged with several Operating a Vehicle while Intoxicated (OVI) infractions, and even a prior hit and run, is once again facing charges related to drunk driving. Shockingly, his previous charges were dropped to lesser sentences or he was granted amended jail times. Now, Nicholas Reinhart’s life has been unjustly cut short and this man is possibly looking at a minimum sentence of 2 years. This is why as a family and a community, we are calling for tougher minimum sentencing for OVI offenders resulting in Aggravated Vehicular Homicide. There are many crimes that hold stricter and harsher penalties than two years, where lives are not lost. The laws simply need to be strengthened in Ohio. If the proper recovery steps are not taken, and consequences are not followed through, it puts innocent people on the streets at risk. This is not an isolated issue. Drunk driving deaths have surged in Ohio by a distressing 33% since 2020. We need to combat this alarming trend, honor the memory of victims like Nick, and ensure justice is served. We cannot let habitual offenders recklessly endanger more lives with short minimum sentences. Legally, ethically, and morally, it is time to act. We urge you to join us in advocating for this critical change in our legislation. Please sign this petition.
