The Issue

I want to share an experience that highlights an alarming issue with police behavior here in Harrisonburg, Virginia. While I was simply trying to complete a DoorDash delivery, I pulled into the Lowe's parking lot and noticed a police officer following me. I turned off my car, opened the door, and waited to see if they had something to say. Instead of communicating, the officer pulled up dangerously close to my open door, causing me to swiftly shut it to prevent an accident.

After parking directly behind me, they did nothing—just sat there, blocking my exit. I had to go into the store, and when I came out 20 minutes later, the police were gone, as if their only purpose was to intimidate. This kind of behavior is not only unnecessary but fosters a sense of fear and distrust among the community members who simply want to go about their daily lives without feeling harassed.

We must address this ongoing issue by implementing clear policies to prevent such intimidation tactics by police officers in our city. These policies should ensure that officers engage with citizens respectfully and professionally, only intervening when there's clear cause. By fostering accountability and transparency, we can build a safer and more trusting community.

Harrisonburg should be a place where all residents feel secure and protected, not watched and intimidated. Let's urge local authorities and law enforcement agencies to adopt policies that emphasize proper conduct and community-friendly policing. Please sign this petition to help us bring about these much-needed changes for a fairer, more just Harrisonburg.
