As an Albanian, I have witnessed a heartbreaking trend over the last 30 years. Our national symbol, the eagle of the Albanian Alps, has been subjected to horrific treatment. Many of our fellow citizens have been capturing these majestic creatures, killing them and mummifying them as souvenirs for display. This cruel practice has halved the total population of eagles in Albania.

The eagle is not just a bird; it is a symbol of our identity and pride as Albanians. Its dwindling numbers are reflective of our fading respect for nature and heritage. The time to act is now before we lose this iconic species forever.

We are calling on our government to create a special law that will protect these magnificent birds from harm and ensure their survival for future generations. We need strict penalties for those who capture or kill eagles, along with efforts to educate people about their importance.

According to BirdLife International, Albania's national bird is facing extinction due primarily to human activities (BirdLife International). It's high time we reverse this trend and make sure that our national symbol continues soaring in Albania's skies.
