Enact Legislation to Criminalize Leaving Scene After Hitting a Cat
The Issue
Our beloved cat, Kiri, was tragically struck by a vehicle this Christmas Eve. The individual responsible did not stop, nor did they make an effort to get help. Kiri was left alone and helpless until she was unfortunately discovered -- days later, already passed away.
This heartbreaking event was not an isolated incident. According to the Royal Veterinary College, 230,000 cats are hit by cars each year in the United Kingdom alone. Of those, an estimated 26,000 are not immediately killed and could potentially be saved if the incident is promptly reported and medical assistance is sought (Royal Veterinary College, 2020). Our precious Kiri might have been one of those saved if the person who struck her had shown a shred of bravery and responsibility.
We are imploring lawmakers to establish legislation that criminalizes leaving the scene after hitting a cat without attempting to seek help or contact the owners. We believe this law would compel drivers to think twice before speeding off, leaving another beloved pet to suffer or death. The pain we felt after Kiri's death should not be repeated for any other family.
Please, sign this petition and demand justice for Kiri and all the cats tragically left behind after these incidents. Together we can prevent avoidable suffering and losses.
