This petition is born out of a heartbreaking story. A local rescue dog was recently subjected to sexual abuse by her so-called "owner". Despite the horrific treatment she endured, because animals are legally considered "property", there's a risk that this innocent creature could be returned to her abuser.

This is not an isolated incident. Across the country and around the world, countless animals suffer at the hands of those who view them as mere possessions rather than sentient beings deserving of respect and care. According to Animal Legal Defense Fund, in many jurisdictions, animals are still considered property under law (ALDF). This outdated perspective allows for numerous abuses and injustices.
