Enact Higher Mandatory Minimum Sentences for Repeat Offenders

Enact Higher Mandatory Minimum Sentences for Repeat Offenders
The Issue
This petition has been born out of watching the indifferent attitude of youth offenders, especially in the state of Queensland. The core issue lies in the knowledge that the legal system will impose no severe penalty on them, thus emboldening their disregard for the law. It’s unsettling to watch the judicial system fail in its duty to protect citizens by not imposing penalties that would deter these offenders from breaking the law again and again.
It's heartbreaking to see our state move in this direction, with the demotivating reality that repeat offenders will face little to no real consequence. This creates a lackadaisical attitude towards law enforcement and legal proceedings, and with each non-penalty handed down, our community safety is eroding.
Current sentencing practices display a glaring gap in our justice system. We propose a clear, definitive solution: Implement higher mandatory minimum sentences for repeat offenders, especially youth offenders. The authority to legislate these changes squarely falls on our elected representatives, and it is high time they take a firm stance against peer-crime.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the recidivism rate in Australia is 54.6%, one of the highest among Western countries (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2019). This demonstrates a pressing need for legislation that tackles repeat offenders and emphasizes penal consequences.
By pressing for stronger mandatory minimum sentences, we work towards reinforcing the crucial principle that no crime should be without consequence. It is our plea and hope that this change would rise to deter criminally inclined individuals, ensuring that our judicial system can fulfill its role in keeping its citizens safe.
We implore you to take a stand and let our lawmakers know that it's time for a change. Let's insist on higher mandatory minimum sentences for repeat offenders, particularly youth offenders. Please sign this petition, and make our democracy work for us. The safety of our communities lies in our hands - let's take action now!
