Our Federal Petition needs your Help

We need your help again.

I've been quiet. Not because I have given up our fight but because the systems put in place to protect us; to support us; to ensure fairness and justice are given a place broke me.

More than 32,000 of you stood beside us by signing this petition. Because of you, Finlay's story reached people across Canada and helped start an important conversation. Thank you. Today, I'm asking you to help us take the next step.

The Ontario government thus far has refused to take necessary action to help protect our children in Emergency Departments from dangerous long waits and a lack of pediatric training. This is why we are now calling for federal leadership: children's safety cannot depend on political will or provincial variability. It requires national standards, accountability, and oversight.

Although healthcare is provincially regulated, the federal government shapes it through the Canada Health Act, national standards, and public health leadership. Provinces must meet the Act's accessibility principles to receive full federal funding — yet they still receive the full transfer even as ER access declines.

This is why we are calling on the federal government to act.

Our Change.org petition helped raise awareness and gave thousands of Canadians the opportunity to stand with us. This new petition is an official Petition to the House of Commons of Canada, sponsored by our Member of Parliament. It gives us the opportunity to place Finlay's story and the changes we're fighting for directly before Parliament.

The federal petition asks Parliament to:

• Strengthen federal oversight of the Canada Health Act.
• Tie federal health-transfer funding to enforceable national standards for pediatric emergency care and sepsis treatment.
• Require transparent reporting and compliance to ensure timely, life-saving care for all Canadians.

We only have a few weeks left to gather signatures (petition closes August 29). Although more than 32,000 people signed our Change.org petition, only a few thousand have signed the official parliamentary petition. If you are a Canadian or Permanent Resident of Canada you are eligible to sign the federal petition, together we can send a powerful message that Canadians believe every child deserves timely, life-saving emergency care.

For those interested in reading more - here is what I have learned in the last 10 months

• That there was never going to be justice in a lawsuit. That the process is dehumanizing and re-traumatizing.
• The Ontario Minister of Health only granted our meeting to quiet the media attention around Finlay's story. Not one of our emails since has been acknowledged or answered.
• The College of Nurses of Ontario, the regulatory body meant to protect patients, deems that nurses who in their own words lacked knowledge, skill and judgment to make the right assessment and who posed a "high risk of patient harm" warranted no action to be taken. Not even additional training.
• A child can die and a coroner's inquest be deemed necessary, yet families and the public still face a 5–7 year wait because the system is overwhelmed.

All these systems exist to protect. Yet each one is either fundamentally broken or so overloaded that it cannot do its job, cannot put measures in place to keep the public safe.

So yes, this broke me and it's taking time for me to come to terms with it all on top of grieving the loss of my son. I just want the impossible – I want him back.

Our hospitals are at a critical breaking point. If you have been following the news you will have seen many headlines talking about hospitals reducing their nursing staff due to budget cuts and that 1 in 10 ER doctors are leaving their profession due to burnout and dissatisfaction with the state of the healthcare system.

We need to stand up and fight for our children's safety. All of us.
