Friends of “CLEAN” adoption reform, Our petition continues to immediately restore the “CLEAN” version of the NY Bill of Adoptee Rights, for unrestricted access to original birth certificates—to get reform right the first time! Yesterday (4/28), I had the privilege of delivering our first 1,167 signatures, and your comments, to: 1. David Weprin (Assembly sponsor) 2. Andrew Lanza (Senate sponsor) 3. Joe Lentol (Chair, Codes) 4. Richard Gottfried (Chair, Health) 5. James Brennan (My rep. / Member, Codes) 6. Diana Richardson (Brooklyn nearby district) PLEASE KEEP SHARING OUR PETITION! 1. More supporters will grow our message! 2. Social media reposts and discussion = more supporters! Keep going! UPDATE! ASSEMBLY SPONSOR DAVID WEPRIN: --He let us know: 1. He hears our voices! 2. He still agrees – “CLEAN” adoption reform is, ultimately, right for New York 3. He suggested that I alert Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie to our petition 4. More specific timeline discussed: i. June 15, 2015: Mr. Weprin suggested, on the floor of the Assembly, that “CLEAN” reform (which honors adoptee rights) could be proposed again after the current bill (which falls short of full rights) becomes law and “once we see how this is working.” ii. April 28, 2016: Mr. Weprin was more specific. He told me that he would reintroduce “CLEAN” reform in the next legislative session (January 2017), if the current bill (which falls short of full rights) becomes law now. iii. NOTE: While we appreciate the added specificity, we still do NOT share Mr. Weprin’s optimism that the Assembly will act quickly to empower the correct reform if we settle for the current bill now. Others have specifically advised us that a second action could take many years to succeed! --We let him know: 1. We’re happy we still agree that “CLEAN” reform is best 2. We hope this petition can help change the “calculus” for “CLEAN” reform now 3. Our petition continues because, as it states, “adoptees in New York deserve to get adoption reform right the first time!” 4. Speaker Carl Heastie will, as suggested, be alerted We are making a stir, thanks to you! Let’s keep going! Let’s find new supporters! Adoptee rights—remain—on the right side of history! Onward!
