Enact a WI statute restricting sex offender residency
The Issue
As a concerned resident and parent in De Pere and Lawrence, Wisconsin, I feel a deep responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of our children. Our number one priority should be to protect our children physically and mentally, and to give parents in our community a little bit of peace of mind. It’s crucial that we take action to safeguard the environments where our kids spend their time, whether it's playing in a local park, swimming at the pool, or attending school.
Currently, there is no specific statute in De Pere and Lawrence Wisconsin that adequately restricts where registered sex offenders can reside in relation to places where children frequently gather. This puts our children at risk and creates an environment of fear and uncertainty for families. To change this, we need a law that enacts a mandatory restriction for sex offenders to live a predetermined distance, such as 2,500 feet or more, from parks, schools, pools, and other areas utilized by children across De Pere and Lawrence, WI.
Evidence from other states shows that imposing such residency restrictions significantly reduces the risk of sex offenders reoffending. In other states where strong residency restrictions are enforced, studies have demonstrated a marked decrease in repeat offenses. We need similar laws here to effectively create safer communities for our children.
Our local government and the power of our and our neighbors' voices have the power to make this change. By enacting a statute that limits where sex offenders can live, we would be taking a critical step towards reducing potential threats and making public spaces more secure for our children.
