Enact a ban on native forest timber harvesting in New South Wales
The issue
For decades, I have witnessed the devastating impact of timber harvesting on our treasured native forests. This relentless activity not only mars our natural landscape but also pushes the endangered Swift Parrot further towards extinction. These beautiful birds, vital pollinators, and contributors to our ecosystem deserve protection and justice, much like the iconic koala which has become a national symbol of conservation efforts.
The Swift Parrot, an angelic and critically endangered species, once thrived in the eucalyptus forests of southeastern Australia. Now, due to the relentless destruction of their nesting habitats, their numbers have severely dwindled. Studies by reputable sources like BirdLife Australia have reported that fewer than 750 breeding pairs remain in the wild, making it imperative that we act swiftly.
The urgency is compounded by the fact that timber harvesting in New South Wales continues to account for significant habitat destruction. These activities not only threaten the parrot but also other native species relying on these ecosystems. Moreover, the Environmental Protection Authority has repeatedly highlighted the unsustainable nature of current logging practices.
We urgently need to place a ban on native forest timber harvesting in New South Wales to preserve these critical habitats. We propose the following solutions:
1. Introduce legislation that establishes a state-wide ban on the harvesting of timber in native forests.
2. Increase investment in sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives, such as plantation timber, to support the timber industry without compromising wildlife habitats.
3. Fund and expand conservation programs specifically targeted at bolstering Swift Parrot populations, including habitat restoration and nesting site protection.
Action must be taken not only for the Swift Parrot but for the integrity of our entire ecosystem. By protecting these birds, we preserve the biodiversity that lies at the heart of New South Wales' natural heritage.
Join me in urging our state government, legislators, and environmental authorities to prioritize this cause. With your support, we can secure a brighter future for the Swift Parrot and other endangered wildlife. Please sign this petition to demand immediate action and safeguard our precious natural heritage.
