Enable National Voting on Birthright Citizenship in America

The Issue

This petition originates from a deeply personal standpoint. I have friends who are legal immigrants and have shouldered the effort and expenses associated with passing the immigration test to officially become United States citizens. These individuals have followed our nation's rules and respected its processes. However, the current situation seems to ignore this narrative to favor those who arrive illegally, as their first act on American soil breaches the law.

Our goal is to enable a nationwide vote on the issue of birthright citizenship. If President Trump’s executive order on birthright citizenship is to be implemented, it should be by the people’s choice, considering the depth of its implications on our country's demographics and principles. This step will truly incorporate the 'Government by the people, for the people's' principle of the US constitution.

According to the Center for Immigration Studies, about 300,000 to 400,000 children are born to illegal immigrants in the United States every year (Center for Immigration Studies, 2018). The consequences of such a huge undocumented population could range from economic implications to national security risks. The decision on birthright citizenship should be a choice for all American citizens. They should have a say in determining the pathways to citizenship in their own country.

Please join in demanding a nationwide vote on the issue of birthright citizenship. This is the essence of democracy - let our voices be heard, and our choices respected. Sign this petition and make a difference in how our country evolves around this crucial issue.
