As a manager in a children's home, I have personally experienced the struggle of setting up bank accounts for children under my care meaning they are not able to claim Personal Independence Payment (PIP), a benefit they are rightfully entitled to. No bank will permit my children under 12 years old to create an account unless it is a savings account. This restriction hinders them from claiming and spending the money they deserve.

In the UK alone, there are approximately 80,000 children in care at any one time (source: Children’s Commissioner for England). A significant number of these children may be missing out on their PIP due to this banking policy. The current age limit set by banks does not consider the unique circumstances and needs of these vulnerable young individuals.

We believe that all children in care should have access to banking facilities irrespective of their age. This will empower them financially and ensure they receive what is rightfully theirs.

It's time we stand up for these young lives who cannot fight this battle alone. We urge financial institutions and relevant authorities to reconsider their policies and enable all children in care to open bank accounts regardless of their age.
