Empower youth: Lowering candidacy age to 21. Let young voices lead

The Issue

I truly believe that the future of our democracy relies on young people actively engaging in shaping our nation's policies and priorities.

When I turned 18, I eagerly embraced my right to vote, feeling a mix of pride and responsibility as I marked my ballot. However, this excitement was dampened by the realization that despite being considered mature enough to contribute to the electoral process, I would have to wait until I turned 25 to even think about running for office myself.

This arbitrary age restriction poses a significant barrier for young individuals like me who are bursting with energy, ideas, and passion to contribute to our political discussions. We are eager to stand shoulder to shoulder with seasoned politicians, ready to address the pressing challenges facing our nation.

Lowering the minimum age requirement for candidacy in Lok Sabha and legislative elections from 25 to 21 years wouldn't just empower young people; it would inject new energy into our political landscape. Younger candidates have a special ability to bridge generational gaps, fostering collaboration and building trust in our political process among citizens of all ages.

It's truly disheartening to see the underrepresentation of young voices in our political institutions. Despite making up over 50 percent of India's population, young people are often sidelined. The numbers speak volumes: while more than half of our nation's population is under the age of 25, the average age of Members of Parliament in the 17th Lok Sabha is 54, with only a small fraction under 40.

By lowering the minimum age requirement, we can unlock the potential of a significant portion of our population, empowering them to actively shape the direction of our nation. It's crucial that our political institutions reflect the diversity and dynamism of our society.

Please join me in signing this petition and urging the Election Commission of India to listen to our plea and consider revising the minimum age requirement for candidacy in Lok Sabha and legislative elections from 25 to 21 years.

Together, let's break down the barriers that hinder our full participation in shaping the future of our beloved nation.

Please sign and share this petition widely, so that every Indian supports this cause, standing in solidarity with young people as we advocate for our rights and amplify our voices in the halls of democracy.
