The Issue

Growing up in Florida, I have always cherished the vibrant wildlife that calls our state home. However, it has become increasingly clear that the Florida Wildlife Commission (FWC) is not serving the interests of our environment. Currently, the governor has the power to appoint FWC members, resulting in a board that often lacks sufficient expertise and has conflicting interests when it comes to protecting our precious wildlife.

This system has led to decisions that do not prioritize conservation. For example, recent statistics from reputable sources show a decline in certain wildlife populations directly linked to policy decisions made by the appointed board. This is not only detrimental to the environment but also affects the Floridian way of life, especially for those residing in rural areas who rely heavily on balanced ecosystems.

We believe that the appointment process for the FWC must change, and it's time to put the power back into the hands of Floridians. We propose that members of the FWC should be elected by the people during the general election cycle every four years. This will ensure that those chosen to protect and manage Florida's wildlife truly represent the interests of our state’s citizens and have the necessary expertise.

This election should be based on the "zones" that the FWC has already established, allowing citizens in each zone to vote for a commissioner who understands their region's specific environmental needs. This approach not only democratizes the process but also promotes accountability and transparency, ensuring that those in power are answerable to the people they serve.

We owe it to ourselves and future generations to ensure that our wildlife is managed by individuals committed to conservation and knowledgeable about our unique ecosystems. By signing this petition, you are advocating for a more democratic process that respects both the people and wildlife of Florida. Please join us in this crucial movement to Protect What’s Wildly Yours!

Sign this petition to empower Floridians to elect Florida Wildlife Commission members and ensure that our natural heritage is preserved for future generations. Let's bring accountability and transparency to the way our wildlife is managed.
