Request For Emory (All Colleges) To Make Classes P/F An Option Due to COVID-19 Outbreak

The Issue

Given the fact that Emory has changed classes to be online due to the outbreak of COVID-19, we believe that the appropriate action that the university should take is to allow students to choose if their classes will be graded on a pass/fail scale or on the regular grading scale. Whatever the choice, all classes should still count for their respective requirements. (Georgetown University has already implement this) In reality many of these classes do not properly translate to an online environment. In addition many of the older professors in Emory, while having unbelievable forces in their fields, have very little to no experience of managing courses online. Furthermore, the grading process will be severely limited and will place undo stress on to students who have much less control over their ability to properly prepare for exams. The benefits of implementing this administrative change severely outweigh the risks. It is much more fair to students that graduate schools and employers see "P's" on students' transcripts than potentially risking students getting grades well below their GPA potentially negating all the hard work they have done (and will do in the future), destroying their employment and graduate prospects. We hope that the University enacts this change to the benefit of the entire student community.
