Problem
Middle school students in Broward County that are in the EMF program take advanced online math courses, even ahead of the GEM curriculum, so that they finish through pre-calculus when they graduate 8th grade. Parents & students were  told when they signed up that the students' official quarterly grades would be calculated using the EMF assignment & test grades for coursework completed each quarter, and those grades would be curved and reflected on their report card.
Although we knew that they wouldn't receive grades for Algebra I and Geometry (just pass/fail credit), we are now being told that these students will not be receiving grades either for Algebra II and Pre-Calculus. They will only receive credit for the course, not a grade. These are high school honors courses, so in total, they would be missing out on at least 4 potential A's that would be worth 5 points each toward their Cumulative GPA. The students in GEM taking some of the same exact classes are receiving their grades. It is unfair for these students. EMF students have worked alone for almost 3 years with no teachers and put in ridiculous hours on evenings, weekends, vacations, holidays and entire summers to sustain a high grade.

Solution
If students in GEM can get grades for the same exact classes, then Broward County Public Schools should find a way to to give grades to the kids in EMF as well, rather than just credit. They should add those grades back into their GPA. And they should be put on report cards so they show on transcripts.

Personal story
My son has been taking EMF since 6th grade and will be finishing 8th grade this year. I know I am not the only parent who understands how hard our sons and daughters have worked to earn these grades. It is frustrating and disappointing to see what they have rightfully earned and is not being given to them, but rather feels like its being taken away.
