As an ostomate for the past 18 months, I have experienced firsthand the difficulties and stigmatisation that come with this surgery.
One of the most pressing issues that needs to be addressed is the lack of access to freely available stoma supplies.

It is unacceptable that ostomates can only obtain supplies through approvals from GPs and stoma nurses, or by having them delivered to their homes. In emergency situations, time is of the essence and waiting for supplies is degrading, paralysing and wrong.

That's why I am calling on chemists, supermarkets, ambulances, all hospital wards (including A&E), airports, and other public places to make emergency stoma kits readily available for ostomates.

According to a survey conducted by Coloplast in 2019, over 50% of ostomates have experienced leaks while out in public. This can lead to embarrassment and even social isolation. By making emergency stoma kits more accessible in public places, we can help prevent these situations from occurring.

Furthermore, with cutbacks on NHS funding leaving many without proper access to products they need daily; it's imperative we take action now before it's too late!
