Embry- Riddle Exemptions for Off-Campus and Private Housing Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Embry- Riddle Exemptions for Off-Campus and Private Housing Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic.
The Issue
ALLOW ERAU STUDENTS TO OPT-OUT OF MANDATORY HOUSING:
As of July 9th, 2020 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) has not taken proper safety precautions regarding the mandatory 2-year housing for new and transfer students. ERAU is planning on operating all nine of their residence halls at full capacity for the Fall 2020 semester. With some of ERAU’s dorms housing 8 residents in one suite, many students are fearing for their physical safety while sharing a 10’x17’ room with another person and sharing a single bathroom with seven different people amidst a global pandemic. Furthermore, while ERAU does provide private housing, these rooms are reserved for the Disability Services Departments and inaccessible for most students. With many students returning back to ERAU in Fall, our safety and well-being should be a top priority, particularly given the continuing rising COVID-19 numbers in the state of Florida and Arizona. Instead, Embry-Riddle has not yet put any measures in place that facilitate our confident and sage return to campus amidst a global pandemic.
The students and the Embry-Riddle community urge the housing department and administration to re-consider their two-year mandatory housing policy to allow students to return safely to campus. To date, the Housing Department has failed to keep ERAU residents updated on the situation, and are unable to answer further questions or details regarding the precautions that are being taken and if any changes have been made regarding the current living arrangements. Allowing off-campus housing exemptions will help allow for safer accommodations within ERAU Residence Halls. This will ensure a safe environment for all ERAU students, to confidently return to campus amidst a global pandemic.
Please sign this petition to voice our concerns over the current housing arrangements and help improve and enhance the safety of all ERAU students by having the university provide private rooms and off-campus housing exemptions for the Fall 2020 semester.
