We are fortunate to live in a country that prioritizes the equality of race, ethnicity, religion, education and the LGTB community. Unfortunately, what many Canadians are unaware of, is that to this day we still fall short in regard to women's wages. Studies show that in 2015, Canadian women earned approximately 87 cents for every dollar that is earned by men. While in Canada, over the last 30 years the percentage of working women has significantly increased from 42% to 60% the gender wage gap is still a recurring issue. Stated by Sheila Block, a senior economist at the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, "You have to consider the impact sexism has on women throughout their lives, both in the workplace and outside of it. Consider, for example, the educational choices that women are steered into, the unequal responsibility placed on the child and elder care, the limited opportunities for advancement and that women negotiate smaller salaries — all this has a cumulative impact on women’s earnings.” Women are earning fewer salaries than the men in our country for several reasons. To begin with, not enough women have access to what is known as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) occupations. Women are required to refrain from pursuing these occupations because they have other responsibilities such as childcare or pregnancy. In 2009, it was estimated that one out of every five part-time workers that are females claimed to have family responsibilities. To add, around 13 percent of these women said they worked part-time because they had to take care of their children, compared to the two percent of men that faced the same responsibilities. The Gender Wage Gap not only effects several women in Canada but does it shape how gender-based discrimination is viewed in the future! This is why it is time for a genuine change!
