The Issue

For my whole existance, I've been tightly budgeting my expenses, trying to save for my future and manage the cost of living in Ontario. One of the most significant and frustrating expenses I face is mandatory vehicle insurance. It's a financial burden that not only strains my pockets but also limits my financial growth opportunities. This is a reality for countless others like me who are struggling to make ends meet in an economy where every dollar counts.

Currently, vehicle insurance in Ontario is not just expensive; it's mandatory. According to the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA), the average premium in Ontario is among the highest in Canada. These high premiums make it increasingly difficult for individuals and families to afford other essential needs, such as housing, education, and healthcare.

Is mandatory vehicle insurance truly the only way to ensure road safety? Many argue that it limits personal freedom and financial autonomy. There are feasible alternatives that can maintain safety while offering flexibility to the consumer. For instance, implementing a liability-only requirement could maintain accountability while reducing costs. Encouraging competition among insurers to lower premiums through discounts for safe drivers is another viable solution.

If other provinces and states have managed to implement less restrictive regulations while maintaining road safety, why can't Ontario? Allowing residents the choice to opt-out of vehicle insurance or choose pared-down coverage options can foster a more economically inclusive environment.

I urge policymakers in Ontario to reconsider the necessity of mandatory vehicle insurance in its current form. By offering options, we empower residents to take control of their financial decisions and reduce unnecessary expenditure.

Please sign this petition if you believe in the freedom of choice and financial independence for Ontarians. Together, let's urge our leaders to make a change for the better.
