Help Elk Grove High School Save The Birds

Help Elk Grove High School Save The Birds

The Issue

Every day when I walk down the hallways of Elk Grove, it is very rare that I don’t come across a dead bird. Fall is upon us and it is the prime time for migratory birds to navigate south for the winter. Unfortunately, many of these birds are not making it that far and are hitting the windows of our school by the flocks. As a lover of everything with feathers, walking past a window and seeing little birds I have never seen in the wild before lying dead at my feet is disturbing and flat out wrong. There is a very simple solution to our problem: a series of window stickers around our school to start saving the birds. There are cheap, transparent options to keep the school bright and the little creatures save and aware. The fact that there hasn’t been an improvement when so many people have seen this and ignored the problem is concerning. For so many years, hundreds of birds have hit our school and died, and the death count is only going to go up if we don’t act immediately. To help pay for the decals, $2.66 per 24” x32” window, for many (preferably all) transparent windows and doors, a fundraiser or donation box would help cover funds for each classroom and especially the hallways. For EG to reach our goal of covering every glass surface that could be potentially harmful for birds, it could start a revolution in the district for every school to bird proof their windows, helping everyone. While the decals are the cheapest option, there are other options such as effective, bird friendly Crash Preventers, costing up to $29.95 for 48” width windows, acting like a curtain that could be installed behind the normal curtains in all the classrooms.
