Boston College’s Eurocentric Core Curriculum is an Injustice

After careful analysis of the core curriculum at Boston College, we, the students, have come to acknowledge the lack of core courses that expand beyond a eurocentric focus, which is particularly evident with the history core. We believe that there are enormous benefits of providing a broader base of culturally diverse core history classes and that there is a demand and desire to do so as well. As stated in Boston College’s Philosophy of the Jesuit Core, “The Core Curriculum thus furthers the development of the intellectual, reflective, ethical, and creative habits of mind that will enable students to become lifelong learners, to seek meaning in their lives, and to work toward constructing a more just and human world.” With the addition of core history classes that emphasize the importance of global histories, rather than merely “understanding European history and the impact of European institutions on the modern world,” Boston College will be able to truly accomplish its philosophy.
