The Facebook group STOP the CANAL CLEAR CUT was formed December 2, 2017 after the news November 20, 2017 that the New York State Power Authority already was in the process of clear cutting trees and vegetation along the beautiful, historic banks of the Erie Canal. Our Canal is loved by boaters, dog walkers, runners, bikers and nature lovers. The Erie Canal is a destination for travelers world-wide. For many of us, the canal is the very reason our town exists. It is not just people who love this greenway, it is an invaluable habitat for birds and wildlife. This project started in Medina, NY much to the shock of people in Orleans County who had little or no prior notice. We on the east side of Monroe County have said no further. We have appealed to the Power Authority, the Canal Corporation, and Governor Cuomo to stand down until the environmental impact statement, that should have been done a year ago, is conducted. The Power Authority is not above the laws of this state. We are demanding transparency and accountability. Time is running out. We only have until February to create a ground swell they cannot ignore.
