Eliminating Exams for the 1st Semester of the 2020-21 School Year at MSHS

The Issue

Due to having nearly 1/3 of our 1st semester being held purely online, and not in active learning environments, we feel it is too much to ask to have a semester exam based on knowledge that we learned only 2/3 during school, and 1/3 on our own time which is full of distractions. A system of having any type of exam is set up for failure, for those who have harder times learning in a virtual setting, or those who need extra help and were unable to get it, will inevitably not do well in the exams which will result in school wide lower grades of even the top students. Having exams during a crisis like the time we are in, adds stress and anxiety on top of the already high amounts we are put in as students. This will lead to decreases in the mental health of the student body along with our grades, to an even further extent than to what it has already degraded due to the various lockdowns and confinement’s we have been in.
