Introduction:

Before delving into the concerns and proposed changes, let's take a moment to understand the current E-Pass system in place at Albertville High School. The E-Pass system is designed to provide students with a digital method of requesting permission to leave the classroom for various reasons, such as visiting the library, counselor, nurse, main office, or making up work for other teachers. It's important to note that E-Passes are not limited to bathroom use; they serve as a gateway to various in-school resources and activities.

The E-Pass Process:

Request Submission:

When a student needs to leave the classroom for a valid reason, they must initiate the process by submitting an electronic pass request through the E-Pass system. If the computer doesn't allow that student to go. The teacher has no say in the matter.

Approval from the System:

The system then processes the request and either grants or denies permission based on the availability of slots in the hallway. Currently, only 15 students are allowed in the hallways at any given time, which, with a student population of over 1,700, creates a significant 113 to 1 student-to-hall pass ratio. This means if a kid needs to see the nurse for any reason ,but the halls are too full then that student will not be able to go

Inequity in the Hall Pass :

Furthermore, the current system lacks fairness as teachers and administration are not required to utilize the E-Pass system, creating an uneven playing field for students and staff alike.

• The Concerns:

The E-Pass system, while intended to streamline and modernize the pass process, has raised a host of concerns. These concerns include technical difficulties, disruptions in the learning process, the question of whether such reliance on technology is truly enhancing the educational experience, or, as some statistics suggest, hindering it, and the inequity in hall pass usage.

Our Proposal:

We propose that Albertville High School reevaluates the E-Pass system and considers returning to traditional methods for student passes or exploring alternative solutions that do not negatively impact students' education and privacy rights. A possible solution may be that we limit to one kid per class or give the teachers the ability to make the judgment themselves.
