Nitrous oxide abuse may remain largely undetectable, but the physical signs, like vitamin deficiency, anemia,  nerve issues, start surfacing too late. It's time for decisive action to protect our vulnerable youth and curb this growing menace.

The abuse of nitrous oxide, especially among teenagers aged 14-18, has skyrocketed by 600%. This startling increase is alarming, especially given how easily accessible nitrous oxide is. Sold in gas stations, smoke shops, and grocery stores, often flavored to entice young users, nitrous oxide's benign appearance hides a silent killer. Hospitals report a 29% increase in related hospitalizations and a staggering 97% increase in deaths linked to its abuse. With ER visits up by 32%, it is evident we are facing a public health crisis.

While nitrous oxide might seem innocuous as a legal purchase, its misuse has severe health consequences, including potential brain damage, memory loss, and physical injuries. As a community, we have a responsibility to prevent these tragedies and protect our youth from harm. We must take a strong stand against the sale of nitrous oxide in Kansas, starting in Johnson County, where the issue is deeply concerning.
